Some children really struggle with losing—especially during games. Sally Sore Loser is a thoughtful children’s book that focuses on this exact challenge and offers a gentle way to talk about frustration, emotions, and healthy competition.
Sally doesn’t like losing at all. Whenever she doesn’t win a game, she becomes very frustrated and has a hard time managing her emotions. Because of this, the book was recommended to us by a school psychologist, as my child also struggles with being a “loser” during playtime.
The story follows Sally during school games with her friends. When things don’t go the way she wants, she gets angry and reacts negatively. Over time, her friends stop wanting to play with her. This part of the story felt very real and relatable, especially for parents raising children who are still learning emotional regulation and social skills.
Toward the end of the book, Sally has an honest and meaningful conversation with her mother about losing. Together, they talk about how games are not just about winning, but about having fun, enjoying friendships, and learning from experiences. Slowly, Sally begins to shift her mindset and tries to enjoy the process of playing instead of focusing only on success.
My child doesn’t usually enjoy reading this, but this story really caught his attention. I realized that the book gently encourages him to face his fear of losing. He still struggles with accepting loss—or the idea of being left out—but that’s exactly why this story matters to me. It opens the door to conversations about resilience, growth mindset, and learning through play.
Sally Sore Loser is an APA (American Psychological Association)–recommended book, which makes it especially reassuring for parents looking for parent-approved, emotionally supportive children’s books.
If you’re looking for a bedtime reading option that supports emotional development in early childhood, this book is definitely worth checking out.
